Fritillary butterfly in a field of pennyroyal wildflowers

Fritillary on a Pennyroyal

No, that is not the title of some new British show on PBS.  They are the names for this class of butterfly and the wildflowers in which it forages.

For this week, a series of such butterflies in their native wildflower habitats are presented.  With the advent of spring, the possibility for capturing such pictures is ideal.  Some of these were photographed along the American River Parkway, while others were taken in late spring or early summer last year in nearby Sierra meadows after the snow melt.

My go-to photographic setup these days for these type of captures is with the Canon EOS 90D cropped sensor body and the EF 100-400L f/4.5-5.6 mk2 lens.  This lens has an outstanding macro capability while the 400 mm reach allows me to keep my distance from such insects without scaring them off.
