Hunter's moon rising behind a valley oak tree

Hunter's moon rise

The Hunter's Moon rising above a valley oak tree.

I had an opportunity for a redo of the full moon rising behind my favorite oak tree during the Hunter's moon a couple of weeks back.  This time I was able to get in the proper position early enough to achieve a better composition while also better dialing in the settings for the sharpest results.  You can see some other captures of the same moon rise over its progression below.

Equipped with the newest Canon EOS 90D DSLR mounted on the EF 500mm L f/4 IS lens, I was able to achieve my best results yet.  The newest Canon cropped sensor at 32M pixels seems to be a game changer for this type of photography (along with for wildlife).  I get much better flexibility for cropping, along with improved dynamic range and high ISO performance compared to my older 70D and 7D mk2 bodies.  As a result, my need for a teleconverter and the previous trade-off in IQ is something that I see will be greatly diminished with this newer body.  Based on their latest in sensor technology improvements, I can't wait to see what Canon will do in the future for the 5D series full frame body?

Seasons of the MoonOn a related note, a new book has just been released by Michael Carabetta: Seasons of the Moon.
It is a collection of images with folk names and lore of the full moon. One of my images is used in describing the Oak Moon.  The book is published by Chronicle Books and you can also find it on Amazon here.
