lands of the Arctic Tundra

Arctic mountain reflections

Reflections of a mountain range within the Yukon providence of Canada.  Taken in the morning light under smokey conditions due to a number of wildfires burning in the region. This image was captured along the Dempster Highway route from Dawson City of the Yukon to the Inuit village of Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean of the Northwest Territories.  As one travels further north, the terrain becomes more barren due to the prevalence of permafrost and extremes of the winter.  It is unfortunate that conditions were so smokey, as the scenery looks quite spectacular and I would expect to have great landscape photography potential under better skies.

Most of the images covered below were captured on the Dempster Highway and subsequent travels on the Denali Highway in Alaska.  Calling them highways is somewhat of a misnomer as they are mostly dirt, with the Dempster route being about 570 miles, and Denali about 130 miles.  Note that the Denali route refers to the road between Cantwell and Paxson, not the more heavily traveled road in the national park itself.
