Salmon Glacier

Salmon Glacier

I am back after a 29 day adventure motorcycle trip through British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska.  The ride spanned 8950 miles, with about 1500 miles being off-road, exploring many reaches of the northwest of the American continent, including a trip out to the most northern Canadian town of Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Sea. I traveled with 2-4 other friends depending on the legs of the route, camping for all but 2 days, with all the riders and bikes doing well, with no mishaps other than an obligatory flat.

This week reflects images captured of the Salmon Glacier that sits between British Columbia and the southeastern tip of Alaska.  The glacier is vast in comparison to most roadside visible glaciers one encounters in travels through Alaska or Canada; A true sight for wonder, reaching off into the horizon toward the west. The current terminus at the  southeastern end is shown in the 4th image. A good vantage point is reachable via a 25 mile dirt mining road that winds up a ridge out of the isolated Alaskan town of Hyder, just over the border from the Canadian town of Stewart.  The skies were hazy during this visit due to a large number of forest fires burning at the time (along with a record breaking heat wave).  You can also view a video captured of the Salmon Glacier here.

Photographic equipment wise, for this trip I brought: Canon EOS 70D with an EFS 18-135mm and EF 100-400L mk2 lenses, G7X mk1 compact (for the tank bag), GoPro Hero 4 Session, and a DJI Mavic Air drone.  I was able to pack to cram all this (plus extra batteries, polarizer) into one shoulder bag and fit it into the volume of one-half of one of the side panniers of my trusty BMW F800GSA motorcycle.

Subsequent weeks will cover other photogenic aspects of my travels along this ride.
