Return to Loney Meadows
One
of my favorite undisturbed locations of the Sierra, Loney Meadow is a
pristine habitat for wildflowers and native pollinators. I revisited
the area with friends last week to enjoy a day hike and some intimate
photography. You can read more about Loney Meadows and see more images
from a previous nature trip report
here.
Since posting this original trip report I was contacted by one of the
members from the Loney family (Sharon Loney Gabler) that first arrived in
the Grass Valley area back in 1856. They used to graze their
cattle in this meadow, along with cattle drives through town. Their family was also responsible for helping to
establish the original fire lookout on nearby Grouse Ridge back in 1923.
It is quite facinating to learn about this piece of history after
independently visiting this location through other naturalist contacts.
Below are some additional select images from my explorations of Loney Meadow and habitat along the way along Bowman Lake Road. The first row are from the intrepretive nature area and developed picnic area along Bear Creek (closer to Highway 20) as managed by PG&E.
