Open grasslands south of 50

End of the road

This open grassland studded with blue oaks, is targeted for development with 11,000 new residences, fueling the ever expanding sprawl for the city of Folsom.  Now that the drought situation is markedly improved for this portion of California, I thus expect time is short before some of this landscape is forever gone to the blade of bulldozers.  Never mind that one of the largest employers in Folsom, Intel Corporation is actually shrinking, having a layoffs in the hundreds, and also discontinuing their shuttle service the end of this year out of Mather, that connects to their other major sites at Santa Clara and Hillsboro in Oregon.

This oak savannah region is one of my favorite areas in the Sacramento foothills, covering it over the years for photography, also mentioning it in previous blogs.  I also cover this area in my latest book: Travel Guide to California Photography.

Spring is one of the best time when the grasses are green and there is some water about to support additional compositions, including some with reflections.  The images shown below are from two different shoots. The first three being in the morning captured back in March, and the last five near sunset in April.  Being close to the area, I try to time visits to when there may be some good clouds to work with if possible.  The image above appeals to me due to the softer side light on the green grasses, with a small path leading out over a small rise, with a more foreboding sky in the distance.  I purposely got low enough in the framing of this to exclude more distant landscapes, creating a sense of mystery as to where this path may lead.
