North Canyon Cascade

North Canyon Cascade

This dramatic cascade is located in the Kolob region toward the northwest portion of Zion National Park in southern Utah.  To limit the impact of excessive traffic to this delicate area, it is only accessible by permit.  The difficult hike to this location further diminishes the number of visitors.  But the beauty is incomparable and well worth the effort.  I donated a large framed print of this particular image to KVIE public television that they have accepted for their annual art auction fundraiser. KVIE will be auctioning it off on TV, Saturday 9/20 between 6:00 and 6:30pm on broadcast channel 6.1.  You can learn more about this worthy cause here

This specific image was photographed with a Canon 50D, EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens at 21mm, while on a tripod standing in the water.  An aperture setting of f/16 and a shutter speed of 1.3 seconds was applied, using a polarizer to reduce the amount of glare and further accentuate the colors.  This particular lens is one of the sharpest EF-S lenses that Canon offers and a good choice on a cropped sensor body when it is necessary to travel light for more arduous hikes like this one.
