Flower fly pollination

Flower fly pollinator (syrphus ribesii)

A flower fly (known scientifically at Syrphus Ribesii) pollinating a California Waterleaf wildflower. Photographed up at Loney Meadows this last weekend.  This is a great meadow for exploring wildflowers, insects, and birds. This outing and its isolation was a personal cleansing for myself after photographing the Hangtown motocross races a couple of weekends back :^)

To capture this photograph I used my Canon 5Dmk3 handheld at ISO 1600, f/9, and 1/1600 sec with a 100mm f/2.8 L-series IS macro lens.  This combination has worked wonders for being fast enough for wildflower and insect photography in order to keep images sharp while still having sufficient flexibility in the depth-of-field control.  The focus speed with this combination just kicks butt.

You can learn more about the Loney Meadow area in a summary I have put together in new article write-up I just posted on my website under Nature trips
