Kolob Terrace

High plains of the Kolob Terrace

Kolob TerraceA lone cow grazing on the high plains of the Kolob Terrace on the outskirts of Zion National Park.  This location is a bit more off the beaten path from the main tourist drag down in the park.  I ended up bivouacking out in this general area while passing through the park, after unable to find a reasonable camp site closer in.  I was surprised to see how crowded Zion was in early November on a Monday, not thinking I would need reservations.  Apparently the Utah tourist board has done quite a good job in encouraging visitors to this beautiful park.

The grass up on this plain was remarkable for its pristine nature, apparently based on its isolation from other non-native grasses or invasive weeds.  A small cloud front moving through the area helped to provide a bit more reflective lighting for this photograph.  This was shot with a Canon EOS 70D with the EF-S 17-55mm lens at 55mm with a circular polarizer, 1/80th sec, f/14, and ISO 400.
