Planet Trona
The Trona Pinnacles under the milkyway. These rather large spire shaped rock formations are the remains of ancient tufa formations similar to what finds at Mono Lake, but bigger. They are composed of a calcium carbonate mineral that precipitated out of solution from spring water that used to upwell into an ancient lake that once submerged this area. The difference is that this lake bed dried out over hundreds of thousands of years ago, while Mono Lake is still alive. I visited this location last week during a trip on the way back through the Eastern Sierras from Southern California.
This was shot with my Canon 5D mark III at ISO 6400 with a Canon 17-40mm EF L f/4 lens wide open. Use of the 5Dmk3 seems to do fairly well for this type of high ISO night photography.
