American River Glow

American River Glow

Backlighting of the American River at sunrise.  Photographed close to my backyard and also one of my favorite locations of the parkway at "Upper Sunrise".  The photography conditions here is more ideal due how the river has a more east-west orientation for this particular stretch.  This helps better facilitate this type of lighting, and combined with the more misty conditions in the winter months, can result in images that have a more mystical appearance.  It is a revisit of one of my favorite compositions.  As the weather conditions, wildlife, and presence of other opportunities change, each time can yield different results.

Depending on the depth of the water, either tall rubber boots or fisherman's waders are necessary to reach a location toward the center of the river for the best compositions.  The image was captured with a Canon EOS 70D with a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L lens on a tripod at 250mm, f/8, 1/800th sec, and ISO 400.  In areas where there is a higher risk of falling into the river with my equipment, I sometime use the less expensive 70D body versus my 5D mark III or 7D mark II.

This location and others on the American River Parkway will be covered in a new photography travel guide book on California I plan on releasing this spring.
