That second afternoon we had some free time to cool our heels, review our work back at the camp, and goof around exploring some of the more unusual local spectacles. The giant Jesus on one of the hilltops of a gated community was entertaining. After talking the guard at the gate into letting us pass, we drove up to the top to see and photograph it up close. On the other side of the mythical spectrum, we then checked out what is claimed to be the world's largest (and topless) mermaid. Apparently the creator of this ran out of money (or inspiration?) before fully completing this work of art. Set within a local neighborhood, it is oddly surreal. I guess we have found two more good reasons for zoning ordinances.
